This is a basic overview of Marine Corps History. Much of this is taken from general knowledge that had to be learned in Boot Camp. Being that this list is extremely long, I split it up into three sections: "General History", "People", and "Battles and Wars". Hopefully this serves as an adequate study guide for Meritorious Boards or Boot Camp. If you know of any other good information to put up, feel free to contact me and let me know! I'll do my best to keep this updated and thorough.

 

General History

 

 

A: November 10, 1775

A: Nickname given to Marines by Germans ("Teufelhunde") at the Battle of Belleau Wood during WWI

A: Archibald Henderson. He served 38 years as the 5th Commandant of the Marine Corps (1820-1859). He served a total of 53 years.

A: The Marine Corps Band, a nickname given to them by President Thomas Jefferson


A: It is a cross-shaped braid worn on the top of officers' barracks cover, which originally enabled sharpshooters in the riggins of sailing ships to distinguish between friend and foe.



A: The blood that Marines shed at the Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican War.


A: It was the Army infantry sword use by Army and Marine Corps officers during the Civil War. After the Civil War, the sword was passed down to Marine NCOs, the only NCOs in any branch of the US armed forces who are authorized to carry swords.
